Joseph Elworthy

President & CEO of the Vancouver Academy of Music (VAM), Professor Joseph Elworthy, has been a featured performer on such stages as Alice Tully Hall, Suntory Hall, Carnegie Hall, the Library of Congress, and Sejong Hall. Mr. Elworthy has been named a Fellow of The Royal Conservatory of Music for his extraordinary contribution to Canadian Arts and Culture. His recordings can be heard on EMI, Sony, Archetype, Naxos and Bose record labels. Prof Elworthyhas received multiple Canada Council career grants exceeding $50,000. Mr. Elworthy is a Juilliard School and Yale University graduate, studying with legendary pedagogue Aldo Parisot. Upon graduation from Yale, Joseph received the Aldo Parisot – Yo-Yo Ma Prize, the highest honour issued to a graduating cellist. Before his leadership role at VAM, Joseph was a member of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra. Prof. Elworthy is in high demand as a jury member for international competitions and a guest lecturer at such schools as the Beijing Conservatory, Harvard University, the Glenn Gould School, and the Royal Northern College Manchester. Mr. Elworthy previously served for eight years as music director of the Haw Par Music Academy in Hong Kong. In addition to his President & CEO role at VAM, Joseph is co-artistic director of the Sea to Sky Summer Chamberfest and the Academy Chamber Players. Joseph plays on a rare Ferdinando Gagliano, formerly belonging to the legendary German cellist Hugo Becker.
